The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities will hold its 2010 Spring Seminar at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, 625 Fourth Avenue South, in Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, May 18th, from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. After a buffet breakfast served from 8:00 - 8:30, the following speakers will address the attendees:

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities will hold its annual winter dinner meeting on Tuesday evening, March 2nd. The meeting will be held at Hartford Life -- Maple Grove site. 2009 Fall Recognition Dinner -- Tuesday, October 6

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities will hold its annual fall recognition dinner on Tuesday evening, October 6th. The meeting will be held at Securian Financial in St. Paul, MN. It will be held in the Minnesota Room of the 400 Building, 400 Robert Street N. We will be recognizing the Twin Cities insurance professionals who have earned LOMA designations over the past year. LOMA Society of the Twin Cities Holds Winter Meeting

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul held its Winter Meeting on March 3 at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park. Following a buffet dinner, Society President Genevieve Stadtler welcomed the attendees and conducted a brief business meeting.

The evening’s keynote speaker was Bill Gould, Second Vice President, Individual Actuarial & Finance, from the Minnesota Life Insurance Company, who delivered a presentation entitled, “Challenges & Opportunities for 2009.” Mr. Gould’s talk began with a recap of the dramatic financial downturn in 2008. It was noted that the equity markets declined from 30-50% and the market capitalization of public insurers plunged. Many companies experienced substantial losses. Yet, the life insurance industry fared better than most. Investments are generally of a higher quality and there is often a longer duration on liabilities. Additionally, cash flows remain strong and there has been far less leverage in the industry. However, Bill noted that we could clearly expect more government involvement as a result of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) and the Capital Purchase Program (CPP), the new federal assistance programs. However, insurance companies must form or buy a bank holding company in order to be eligible for TARP/CPP assistance. Many major companies have applied for assistance, including Hartford and Prudential. The insurance industry can also expect additional regulations from the various regulatory agencies such as the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the state insurance departments. Yet, there may be opportunities for regulations to become more focused, which could improve certain aspects of the regulatory process. Mr. Gould also noted that one overriding issue is consumer trust, which is paramount to our industry. Rating agencies will take a hard look at the industry and greater emphasis will be placed on liquidity, solvency, and diversification. More companies may find themselves in financial distress and there may be additional consolidations and acquisition opportunities. Bill concluded his insightful and engaging talk by commenting that insurance products did not drive these current problems. A “flight to quality” is occurring and prudent companies will be rewarded even in these difficult times.

2008 Spring Seminar - Tuesday May 20, 2008

Our 2008 Spring Seminar will be held at Catholic Aid Association, Tuesday May 20th. The full agenda is listed in this issue of Fellow Talk. We’re pleased to offer topics of current interest. This year we welcome back Joan Andrew of Edward Jones. She has spoken to our organization in the past on financial planning and now tells us about the state of financial fraud and what you can do to avoid being a victim. In addition to Joan, we also welcome back Chuck Anderson of Prudential. A few years back Chuck was our keynote speaker. Again, we look forward to hearing Chuck’s informative and entertaining talk on “Doing the Right Thing”. And we are excited to welcome Ming-Fen Wang for her first visit as a speaker. She is IT Vice President of Architecture & Engineering Services at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Winter 2008 Meeting

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul held its Winter Meeting on March 4 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center. Following a buffet dinner, Society President LuAnn Maxfield welcomed the attendees and conducted a brief business meeting. She also recognized the contributions of past president, Paul Lindemann, and thanked him for his 15 years of dedicated service on the board. LuAnn presented Paul with a commemorative clock on behalf of the Society.

The evening’s keynote speaker was Roger Revak, who delivered a presentation entitled, “The Adversity Factor,” which was both thoughtful and entertaining. Mr. Revak is a vice president and commercial credit underwriter for a regional bank, and an award-wining member of Toastmasters, who became a motivational speaker after a series of crises in his own life. He decided to share his experiences in order to help others deal with adversity and to show how adversity can become a powerful positive force.

Scholarship Applications Due June 30, 2008

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities Scholarship program will award a $500.00 scholarship in 2008 for post-secondary education. Students may be an accepted first year or continuing student.

Eligible students are members of the LOMA Society of the Twin Cities in good standing, their children, grandchildren or spouse. New FLMI designees eligible for membership in the LOMA Society of the Twin Cities are also eligible if they receive their designation prior to the application deadline of June 30, 2008.

A statement of personal goals or development plan must be submitted for post-secondary students. Members or associate members must submit a statement of how their LOMA educational achievements or society membership has helped them. Details are included in the Scholarship Program Guidelines.

Speaker: Jason Busch, Internal Sales Manager, Life Case Design Team Allianz Life Insurance Co. of North America. He spoke on the importance of education in our industry.

Congratulations to the Twin Cities insurance professionals who earned new LOMA designations over the past year (since September 1, 2006).

Spring Seminar 2007 Recap

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) held its Spring Seminar on Tuesday, May 15, at the Catholic Aid Association auditorium in Arden Hills, Minnesota. Following a scrumptious breakfast buffet, Society President Paul Lindemann welcomed all attendees. He also recognized the Company Representatives and Educational Representatives for all the work they do for LOMA and our Society. Each Educational Representative and Company Representative in attendance received a pen made by T.L.C. Toys, a local non-profit organization that
makes toys for needy children. Paul shared with us the story of T.L.C. Toys and its founder, Mel Hartman.

2007 Winter Meeting Recap

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul held its Winter Meeting on March 6 at the Four Points Sheraton in Minneapolis. Following dinner, Society President Paul Lindemann welcomed the attendees and conducted a brief business meeting. He recognized the achievements of departing board members and past presidents Terry Teske and Lori Webb and thanked them for their many years of dedicated service to the organization. He also acknowledged the efforts of immediate past President Rolf Anderson.

The evening’s keynote speaker was Laurie Kimball, who delivered an engaging presentation entitled, “Stress: What, Who, Why and How or the Ups and Downs of Stress.” Her talk focused on recognizing and managing stress.

The LOMA Society of the Twin Cities is pleased to announce that Laurie Kimball will be this year’s keynote speaker at the Winter Meeting. Her talk will focus on recognizing and managing stress.

Participants will learn why stress occurs, the symptoms of stress, who’s affected by stress, and how stress can be managed. Laurie will discuss ways to reduce stress and demonstrate exercises to “recharge.” Resources for learning more about stress will also be provided.

On Wednesday, May 10th, 2006, the LOMA Society of the Twin Cities will host our annual Spring Seminar at the Zuhrah Shrine Center and Mansion, located at 2540 Park Avenue South in Minneapolis. Cost is $40 for members, $50 non-members. Registration and breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. Program begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at noon.

Topics include: 'How you really can afford long term care insurance' and 'Saving money on your health insurance…the FUN way!'
