A Message from the President

My mother said to me, "If you become a soldier, you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as the pope."  Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

Congratulations!  You've attained the prestigious FLMI designation.  Or perhaps you've received one of the numerous associate designations: ACS, AIAA, AIRC, AAPA, etc.  Now what will you become?  I hope there's not a roadblock at the end of your road.  Where are you headed in life?  What's inside of YOU?

I hope you know you are an integral part of a great group of insurance and financial service professionals.  Some of you may be busy making your mark, or painting the landscape of your life.  Your success is our success.  I'd like to hear some of your stories!

To that end, the FLMI Society of the Twin Cities was chartered in 1974 to support you and your colleagues in your educational endeavors and polishing the luster of your designation, to further your career and professional growth.  Even more, we've grown to be a social network, where you can learn about industry trends, life-balancing techniques, and community leadership.

We're constantly aiming to service your needs.  Our quarterly meetings are only four times a year, but our Board is constantly working to bring you the best.  You can be a part of that.  If we haven't seen you for a while, we'll quickly welcome you back!  If you've never been to a meeting, what are you waiting for?

I'm excited to be your new president this year.  We're planning great things to happen this year and I want you all to be a part of our success!  See you soon.

Sincerely,

Michael L. Orr, CLU, ChFC, FALU, FLMI/M, FLHC, ARA, ACS, AIA, AIR, AAPA

President, FLMI Society of the Twin Cities

Do you have speaker ideas?

Selecting speakers for upcoming meetings is one of the toughest tasks continually faced by the Board of Directors.  As a society of members from many functional areas within the insurance and financial services industry, it's difficult to find interesting and appropriate topics and speakers.  Think of it . . . we have members who work in Underwriting, Marketing, Information Systems, Actuarial, Customer Service, Processing, and many other corporate areas.  It's quite a challenge to identify topics that will appeal to this broad array of individuals, and then find a speaker to address the particular topic we have in mind.

Do you have any suggestions for topics or speakers for future meetings?  Have you heard a good, local speaker?  Do you have a particular topic that you'd like to see covered at a future meeting?  Or would you like to offer your own services as a speaker at an upcoming meeting?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, we'd like to hear from you.  Simply contact any of the board members listed on the last page of this newsletter.  Provide us with as much information as you can about the topic or speaker you have in mind; we'll do the rest.

As an aside: We do have a budget which allows us to pay moderate speaker fees, although we don't have the financial means to pay very large fees.  We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Activity Reports from 2001 Officers and Board Members

Julie Hanson, 2001 President

As president, I encouraged and assisted my very capable fellow officers and board members as we worked to bring you three dinner meetings and one half-day seminar.

February 2001 (Sheraton Four Points on Industrial Boulevard): Sheriff Patrick D. McGowan of Hennepin County encouraged our meeting attendees to get involved in their communities, and to seek opportunities to participate and volunteer.

May 2001 (Zuhrah Shrine Center): We held a half-day seminar featuring Ms. Candace Fancher of Innersources, who helped us to "Stay Afloat in the Stresspools of Life."   Mr. Gary Fields of LOMA also discussed "The Life Insurance Industry in the 21st Century, and our breakout sessions focused on E-Commerce, Mail Fraud, and Communications.

September 2001 (Sheraton Midway): Mr. Robert Senkler, Chairman and CEO of Minnesota Life, encouraged all FLMI designees to exhibit professionalism and ethics in all their business activities.

November 2001 (Jax Caf): Mr. Grant Engelmann presented a very entertaining workshop that helped us learn to be master communicators by enabling us to quickly identify four customer types, and learning how to communicate well in a language that each type of customer will understand.

Michael L. Orr, 2001 Vice President and Treasurer

This past year I collected quarterly meeting registrations, prepared meeting rosters and nametags, and coordinated expenses and income.

The scholarship committee continued this year for our second annual presentation of a $500 student award, this year to Andrea Helgager, daughter of Barb Helgager from Prudential.

In September, Mary Smythe and I attended the LOMA annual conference and conferment in Seattle, while life-shattering events of our world unfolded.  At the annual conference, aside from our worries about getting home, Mary and I represented the society in numerous committee meetings.  The Twin Cities FLMI Society sponsored two resolutions before the society assembly and a committee was formed to study annual LOMA society awards criteria.

Mary Smythe, 2001 Secretary

My duties as Secretary for 2001 were to attend all the Board meetings and record the minutes, which were distributed to all board members.  I also wrote an article about our 2001 Spring Seminar which was published in LOMA's Resource Magazine.  I was able to be one of our Society representatives at the LOMA Conference in Seattle and participated in the Officers Training Workshop.

Luanne Maxfield, 2001 Society Committee Representative

In 2001, I continued to be the communications link with the LOMA Headquarters in Atlanta, GA.  On the local front, I served as the link for the Society members to the Board members by providing input from surveys that I designed. The Society members' responses on the surveys are valuable information to the continued success of the FLMI Society of the Twin

Cities.
