A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Fall is here much sooner than expected with the colorful autumn leaves and cool crisp air.
Recognition Dinner
We recognized many new FLMIs at the September 12 th dinner meeting held at Radisson South. Susan Oberman Smith, Vice-President of Product Marketing at Lutheran Brotherhood, was our guest speaker. She emphasized how education, particularly the FLMI designation, is very important for our careers since it provides a very good foundation.
The new FLMIs were recognized and those in attendance received a congratulatory rose and a Twin Cities FLMI pin. Wanda Schalo of American Express won the Mall of America gift certificate for completing the evening' s survey.
2001 Officer Elections
The annual elections for Twin City Officers were held at the September Recognition dinner. The following individuals were nominated and elected:
President: Julie Hanson, Lutheran Brotherhood
Vice President/ Mike Orr, Hartford Life
Treasurer:
Secretary: Mary Smythe, Hartford Life
Member-at-Large: Terry Teske, Minnesota Life
Congratulations and best wishes to those who will lead us in the coming year.
Scholarship
At the Fall dinner meeting, we will announce the winner of our first scholarship contest. This is for the child or other eligible relative of an FLMI or Associate member of the Society. We are anticipating that this will be the first of many scholarships to come. If you have children who are pursuing post-high school education, keep this in mind for next year.
Fall Dinner Meeting
Our upcoming dinner meeting will be held November 14 at JAX in Minneapolis. Our speaker is Dr. Bill Warner on the topic of leadership. He is a very captivating and inspirational speaker regarding a topic that is critical for all. This is definitely a "must attend" dinner.
We will be collecting food donations for the Emergency Foodshelf Network in addition to clothing donations for Ready for Success. The type of women's clothing donations needed are professional (dresses, slacks, blouses) and warm winter clothing.
Check it Out - www.flmi-tc.com
If you have not been to the Society web site, take that extra minute when you're browsing through cyberspace to "check it out". This is the best FLMI web site in the nation and I'm being as impartial as possible. Go and judge for yourself and see what we have to offer!
New Board Addition/Thank You
Welcome to Krishna Wells-Roger of Minnesota Life. Krishna will be joining the board as Program Co-chair.
Thank you to the board members who have made this year a success. Special thanks go to Shelby Hollister of Hartford Life. Shelby will be leaving the Board to spend additional time with her family and focus on her career. Her energy and dedication will be deeply missed. Shelby, best wishes on your endeavors!
It has been a pleasure to service as your Society President this past year. The year has gone quickly and much has been accomplished such as the web site and scholarship fund. More change and growth is guaranteed in future years.
Barb Prinz
President, FLMI Society of the Twin Cities

Orlando Hosts LOMA Conference
The 2000 LOMA conference was held in Orlando from September 24-26. Julie Hanson and Barb Prinz represented the Twin City Society Board. There were many educational and networking opportunities in this Florida paradise. If you have the opportunity to attend, "go", since it is very interesting and informative. Next year's conference is in Seattle.
Here's an idea of what happened this year. Individuals spoke on a wide range of topics. They included William Taylor, co-founder of Fast-Company, who spoke on what businesses must do to compete in our technologically changing environment. Jane Sanders focused on the gender communication issues that we all face. One could see heads nodding in agreement about the biological and perceived differences between men and women. Another speaker, Jack Shaw, discussed Internet, eCommerce, and eBusiness issues. The closing seminar speaker, Michael McKinley focused on how we can stay motivated, lead more and manage less, and make the most of our time.
The seminar ended with an elegant dinner that recognized those earning their FLMI and Associate designations. Individuals were also recognized who earned special honors. The Twin City Society was recognized during the conference for the Outstanding Society Awards we earned.
All in all, it was a wonderful experience. Much was learned from the speakers and others in attendance from across this continent and around the world. If possible, try and make it to Seattle for the conference in 2001.
